On the 18th of February, Prof. Rehan Sadiq, Provost and Vice President for academics of the University of British Columbia Okanagan, and his delegation visited the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Prof. Li Jin, Vice President of SUSTech, and other representatives held discussions with the guests.

During the meeting, Prof. Li Jin warmly welcomed the University of British Columbia delegation and provided an overview of SUSTech’s recent development. He highlighted SUSTech’s commitment as a young research university to cultivate high-level talents with both global perspective and innovative capabilities. Prof. Jin emphasized the standing collaborations between SUSTech and the University of British Columbia and expressed his hope to broaden the scope of cooperation in the future. He specifically mentioned potential areas for collaboration, including undergraduate student-exchange programs, research internship, and joint degree programs. He expressed the desire for both universities to leverage their strengths and work together to promote cooperation in various fields, offering diverse learning opportunities for students and broader research platforms for faculty.

Prof. Rehan Sadiq thanked SUSTech for the warm welcome and hospitality. He provided an overview of UBC’s status as a leading Canadian research university and highlighted UBC’s strengths in interdisciplinary research, close faculty-student relationships, and a diverse and inclusive campus culture. He expressed UBC’s keen interest in strengthening collaboration with SUSTech, particularly in student exchange and faculty research cooperation.

Both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on shared concerns and recognized potential challenges in the collaboration process and expressed a commitment to actively seeking solutions to ensure the smooth progress of the partnership.

Prof. Junjian Wang, Assistant Dean of the School of Environment, Dr. Hao Chen, Executive Deputy Director of SUSTech Global, Ms. Jing Long, Associate Director of SUSTech Global, and Ms. Bao Zhu, Deputy Director of Graduate School Admissions and International Office, also participated in the discussion.

After the meeting, Prof. Sadiq and his delegation joined a guided tour of SUSTech campus.
